In 1982 zijn Ivan Stockmans (spoorwegbediende) en zijn vrouw Marina (kapster) in de Bremstraat in Lummen komen wonen. Vroeger was Ivan motorcrosser, en zijn toenmalige buurman was duivenmelker....Toen hij aan Ivan vroeg om wat met de verzorging van de duiven te helpen, deed Ivan dat met veel plezier...Vanaf toen begon de buurman goed te spelen. "Het eerste jaar dat ik hielp, werd hij kampioen, het tweede jaar algemeen kampioen in Halen, het derde jaar 1e provinciaal Bourges." Toen ik dan verhuisde, begon ik zelf met duiven en met hoge ambitie, want ik dacht van mezelf dat ik er iets van kende. Dat bleek nog niet zo te zijn. Met duiven van die buurman lukte het niet en ik ging dan maar "betere" kopen. Ik pluisde de verkopingen na en duidde mijn favorieten aan met drie kruisjes op het verkoopprogramma....Maar,... meerdere liefhebbers wilden die duiven dan hebben en die wisselden dan voor 500 of 800 Euro van eigenaar..Dat was mij te veel, en ik kocht dan maar halfbroers of halfzusters of andere aanverwante duiven..... Ik begon wel wat beter te spelen maar toch nog niet echt goed. Toen ik zelf eens wat jongen kon verkopen, had ik wat geld om ook eens een duurdere duif te kopen. Zo kocht ik op een verkoop van Deno (nu Deno-Herbots) wat duurdere duiven. Gelukkig was daar mijn 5133433-85 bij, een duivin die moeder werd van 1e provinciaal La Souterraine 1990 (gekoppeld aan Theuninck-Van der Faeille doffer), 1e provinciaal Jarnac 1992 (gekoppeld aan andere duiver) en 2e provinciaal Argenton (weer andere vader). Met deze betere resultaten kon ik meer investeren en nu is mijn hok opgebouwd uit volgende rassen Deno-Herbots (Leefdaal), A. Neven (Lummen), Gijs Peters (Budel, NL alias 'de Olieman'), R. Persoons (Halen), F. Schroyen (Heusden), Leekens-Hermans (As), Jos Thone (As) en Theuninck-Vanderfeaillie(Leopoldsburg. Ik zou heel graag grote fond spelen en daarom wisselde ik in 2001, zo'n 40 jonge duiven met Oliviers-Devos (Kumtich), en in 2002, nog eens 80 jonge duiven!... Deze tandem Oliviers-Devos wil met mijn duiven meer de afstanden 400- 700 km. Spelen, ik met hun duiven de zware fond. Zij hebben vele duiven van Nederlandse fondliefhebbers (J. Steketee, H. Brinkman...) en daarmee hoop ik dan weer te lukken. Nu speelde ik in 2001 wel aan de kop op Barcelona (21° Nationaal duivinnen, en 127° Nationaal tegen 13.161 Ouden..) met een 100% Leekens duivin. Deze duiven kunnen dit ook natuurlijk. Ik moet dit blijkbaar nog leren. Ik had in 1999, 5 duivinnen op een apart hokje maar die vlogen niet veel prijs. Op aanraden van Dirk Leekens zette ik ze naar Bordeaux jaarlingen en 3 ervan hadden prijs. In 2000 gaf ik ze weer mee naar Bordeaux (misschien had ik ze toen al naar Barcelona moeten steken) en ze hadden weer alle 3 prijs. Dit jaar zette ik ze op Barcelona en 2 hadden er prijs, de derde was net te laat'. De stamduiver van het ogenblik is 'De Stuntman' B -5060758/92. Bijna al mijn duiven, behalve die zwarte soort heeft bloed van "de Stuntman". De vader van "de Stuntman" 220/88 werd aangekocht bij "Papy" uit Lummen, de moeder 257/85 is ras "De Busser" uit Kesseloo. Ook hij is een apart verhaal. Ik laat Ivan weer aan het woord: "ik kweekte deze doffer op het einde van 1992. Een mooie duif maar als jaarling moest ik hem geen enkele keer klokken. Hij kwam thuis als ik al lang met de klok naar het lokaal was. Het was een laat jong, en dus kreeg hij nog een jaartje krediet. Als tweede jaarse begon hij wéér slecht. Hij won 3 keer geen prijs. Zijn 4e vlucht was zijn eerste prijs, 1° lokaal met 10 minuten voorsprong en 7e in het samenspel. Vanaf toen is hij geweldig beginnen te komen. Op goed anderhalf seizoen (1994-1995) vloog hij 6 eerste prijzen en nog vele kopprijzen (1° Marne La Vallee 150 d., 1° Marne La Vallee 707 d., 1° Marne La Vallee - 97 d., 1° Soissons 296 duiven. 1° Montargis 115 d., 1° Sens 75 d., 4° Montargis 1.370 d.. Opeens was het een "crack". Na 1994 zette ik hem op het kweekhok, en al vele jaren verkoppel ik hem met meerdere duivinnen. Door ook zonen en dochters van hem op de kweek te zetten (halfbroers en halfzusters) heb ik een stam opgebouwd rond mijn "Stuntman". Let maar eens op de stamboom van de 1° Nationaal Argenton "Pretty Woman" en mijn kweekmethode is duidelijk! Duivensport is toch ook een dosis geluk. Voor hetzelfde geld was "de Stuntman" een "Soepman" wegens zijn bar slechte start.
Methode De nationale overwinningen en de kopduif op Barcelona waren duivinnen, maar eigenlijk is Ivan een echte weduwnaarspeler. Voor 2002 had hij 60 weduwnaars klaar (inclusief jaarlingen.).. Ivan gebruikte zijn zelfde systeem als in 2000. In het jaar 1999, liet hij zijn weduwnaars 2 jongen grootbrengen voor het seizoen. Er was na dit schitterende seizoen veel vraag naar jongen zodat hij een andere voorbereiding verkoos. Toch is Ivan niet
helemaal tevreden over 2001 en zal hij weer in februari een 4 tal laten
broeden en nogmaals... Van de bende jonge bleef niet veel over. Er waren enorme verliezen, meer dan 100 op twee rampvluchten. De verduistering stopte op Orleans (23-6) en dan worden pas de geslachten gescheiden.. Met het schuifdeursysteem worden volgende vluchten afgewerkt: Orleans-Halve Fond,- Bourges-Halve Fond,-Argenton-Halve Fond,- La Souterraine- Halve Fond, en Gueret of Vichy Een zwaar programma voor jonge duivers maar de meeste jaarse weduwnaars werden later op het jaar gekweekt en enkel opgeleerd.Na het jonge duivenseizoen wordt er bijgelicht tot 21.00 ‘ avonds om de duiven vlugger en beter te laten ruien. De jongen krijgen, evenals de weduwnaars, volle bak gevoederd (plus methode van Versele-Laga.) Dubbele nationale
overwinning!!! Zoals ik reeds zei, zaten ertussen de bende verduisterde jongen enkele oude en jaarse duivinnen. Zij legden af en toe wel eens, maar die eieren werden weggedaan. .Toen Ivan overschakelde van verduisteren naar het schuifdeursysteem, hadden twee duivinnen net weer gelegd...... Het waren "Het Zwart Gueretje" en "Pretty Woman". Hij liet ze maar broeden en het feit dat de jonge doffers daar elke week kwamen kabaal maken, zette de duivinnen aan om hun nest hevig te verdedigen.Op Argenton werd het lesbische koppel ingekorfd. Om 14.18 arriveerde "Pretty Woman" (1406 m/min.) En om 14.20 het "Zwart Gueretje" (1400 m/min.).......Toen dat 2 nationale overwinningen bleken, knalde de champagne. "Het

"Pretty Woman"B-5062113-00 won als jonge duif 52e provinciaal Bourges (5.000 d.) en 50e provinciaal Argenton 2.169 d.). In 2001 beginnen te spelen op Orleans 348°/4.347 yearl., ; St.Witz ...10°/999 p.;en dan in 2001: ..1° National Argenton - 1° / 4.865 Jaarlingen Haar pedigree is een voorbeeld van stamopbouw. De vader 723/98, is rechtstreeks op het kweekhok gegaan. Zijn vader is de 'Stuntman' 758/92 en de moeder is NL-1008450/96, rechtstreeks aangekocht bij de gekende Gijs Peters uit Budel (NL), de man met de mirakeluitslagen op snelheid en halve fond in Nederland. Deze duivin is ook moeder van de 1e provinciaal Gueret jongen 2000........ Ivan:... 'Ik denk dat ik heel gelukt ben met G. Peters. Het is ongelooflijk wat deze duiven kunnen'. De moeder van Pretty Woman is 435/97, weer uit de Stuntman maar dan gekoppeld aan 852/90 (M. Everaerts, Diest x Janssen). "Pretty Woman" is een afstammeling uit halfbroer x halfzus!. 4X 1° Provinciaal 2000 !!! Wat gebeurde er met deze
duiven in 2001? Het 1° Provinciaal Limoges, Deno x Leekens, is
achtergebleven op de rampzalige Chateauroux. De 1° Provinciaal Jarnac was
526/96, genaamd "De
Rode Motta", een superduif die na de provinciale
overwinning op het kweekhok ging ( en niet onterecht zo zou later
blijken!). Hij is een zuivere Persoonsduif. Enkele uitslagen van deze
crack: 1° Jarnac lokaal '99, 1° Provinciaal Jarnac 1.112 d. in '00,
2e Jarnac 3.579 d. in '00, 2e Chateauroux 493 d. in '98, 5e Jarnac 1.008

Olivier-Devos uit Kumtich!.(zie rubriek Media) Slot... Iedereen kent mijn voorliefde voor Barcelona..Dat Ivan ook de 127° Nationaal /13.169 Oude vanaf Barcelona won in 2001, was mij opgevallen. Maar doorheen de uitleg van Ivan die namiddag vond ik deze duivin niet terug. Ze zat niet bij de verduisterde jongen en natuurlijk niet bij de weduwnaars. ..Daarom: ..."Waar zit die "Barcelona duivin" Ivan?" ...Deze grijze duivin met ringnr: B-5080333/98 zit helemaal achter in de tuin, op een klein hokje met enkele andere duivinnen en hun partners (8-tal koppels). Ze worden 's avonds laat, na de weduwnaars, losgelaten om te trainen. Het kleine hokje heeft een rennetje en heel de dag open raam. Het was mijn eerste hokje, 19 jaar geleden. Dat andere dat er nog staat, is voor mijn laatste ronde jongen. .. The town of Lummen is situated in the Province of Limburg.In 2000 one man achieved winning 4x lst Provincials from 4 different races. Limoges Old Birds (644km), Jarnac Old Birds (713km), Gueret Young Birds (590km) and Gueret Yearlings (590km).
From 1990 to 2003 he has brought his total Provincial victories to 13!!!. In 2001 he won 2 National races, Argenton Yearlings (560km) with a yearling hen and Argenton Old Birds with a 2-year-old hen. Of course, he also won lst Provincial in these races. His total is 2 National victories and 13 Provincial victories!!!. Not many fanciers can say that! A nice detail: The 2 National victories were on his birthday (11th August), "Happy Birthday" I should say. How do you build a good strain? Almost 19 years ago Ivan Stockmans, who is now 46 years old, and his wife Marina moved to their new house in the Bremstraat 13, Lummen. Before they lived in another house and the neighbour of that house was also a pigeon fancier. "One day my former neighbour asked me to help him with his pigeons. I did not know anything about pigeons, but I accepted and in fact in that first year my neighbour became Champion in the Club. He had never been Champion before. The second year he became General Champion, the third year he won 1st. Then I moved to my new house and became a pigeon fancier myself. I thought I could be Champion myself. I got some birds from my old neighbour and never became Champion. I won only a few prizes, I wanted to buy some new birds so I went to some auctions, but I didn't have enough money to buy the best birds in the sale, so I bought some brothers, sisters or youngsters out of those top pigeons. My results started to get better, bud I decided to put some of my own pigeons for sale, and then invest the money in a few top birds of the auctions. I bought a hen B-5133433-85 from Deno (now Deno -Herbots, Leefdaal). This hen became mother of my 1st Provincial La Souterraine 1990 (596km) paired with a cock from Theuninck & Vanderfaeille mother of my 1st Provincial Jarnac 1992 paired to another cock, mother of my 2nd Provincial Argenton 1992 paired to a third cock. This really was a good hen because my results were good from 1990. I invested some money on other strains. Now I have pigeons from Deno Herbots (Leefdaal), A Neven (Lummen), Gijs Peters (Budel NL), R Persoons (Halen), F Schroyen (Heusden), Leekens & Hermans (AS), Jos Thoné (AS), Theuninck & Vanderfaeillie (L-Burg). I mainly race 300-800km, but in the future I would also like to race overnight races, so I exchanged pigeons with Oliviers & Devos (Kumtich) who have many long distance flyers from the Netherlands (Steketee, Brinkman). The partnership of Oliviers & Devos liked my birds, I wanted their birds. In 2001 we exchanged 40 youngsters, in 2002 we will do the same with 80 youngsters. Hopefully we will both benefit from this transaction. In 2001 I won a good prize from Barcelona (1090km), 21st National hens, 124th National against 13.161 birds. This was a hen, 100% Dirk Leekens (AS). In 1999, I had 5 hens in a small loft, at the end of my garden. They did not do very well in the races, but Dirk Leekens advised me to basket these 5 yearling hens for Bordeaux (800km). Three of them won prizes. As 2 year olds these three hens won at Bordeaux again. In 2001 two out of three won from Barcelona (the third just outside scoring). The base breeder is "De Stuntman"B-5060758-92. Almost all birds in the racing and breeding loft have his blood. The sire of this cock is 220-88, bought at Papy (Lummen) and the dam 257-85, strain De Busser (Kesseloo), De Stuntman" is a special story. Ivan says, "This cock was born in July 1992, a late bred. I sent him to the races in 1993, but the cock did not win any prizes. However, because he was such a beautiful cock I wanted to give him another chance in 1994, but he failed to win in his first three races again. He was sent to his fourth race as a 2 year old and won 1st prize in the club (10 minutes ahead of the next pigeon), and 7th prize overall. From that moment on the "Stuntman" became a real Stuntman". Two years later he won 5x 1st prizes and never missed again, he won 1st Marne La Vallee 150 birds (300km), 1st Marne, La Vallee 707 birds, 1st Marne, La Vallee 97 birds, 1st Soissons 296 birds (230km), 1st Montargis 115 birds (350km), 1st Sens 75 birds (350km), 4th Montargis 1,370 birds. After the racing season of 1994 he went to the breeding loft. I paired him with several different hens, but also paired him with half brothers and sisters, many of them in the breeding loft. When you see the pedigree of. Pretty Woman" (1st National Argenton 2001 Yearling) you will see how I have managed to breed and gain success." Method: The two National victories and the good bird from Barcelona were all hens. Ivan races widowhood with cock’s usually. For the next racing season he has 60 widowhood cocks (yearlings included). He will use the same system as in 2000. In 2001 he used another system in preparing his cocks for widowhood because many fanciers wanted youngsters off his racers, so he let those widowers raise two youngsters. He did not do that in 2000 (his best year). For 2002 he will pair the widowers in February for breeding for four days. The hens go to the aviary. He pairs the cocks again at the end of March for four days breeding and then the widowhood starts. After racing, September, the cocks can raise one youngster; they don't fly out with the hens. The cocks stay inside the loft from September until March. During the season, the cocks train once a day in the evening from 6pm to 7pm... Every week they have two days where they are given either tea or cider vinegar, although during moulting they are given this more often. Three days before a race they are given vitamins. Every month Ivan visits a vet, Hectors (Herk De Stad) or F. Van Den Zanden, for a check-up, but Ivan does not give them medicine. How come? "Earlier I treated the birds when the vets found trichomonas, but sometimes this did not improve the performance of the birds. In 2000 I was winning races and I visited the vet for a check-up. He found a light infection of trichomonas and advised medicine for three days. I did not follow his advice and a week later won 1st. Provincial. Again I went to Hectors and he still found some trichomonas. Again I did not try to cure and won 1st. Provincial again. I don't think that you have to give medicine for a light form of trichomonas, if it does not get any worse then leave it. I still go for check-ups every month. For three years now I have treated the cocks during the racing season. I do treat for 12 days before racing against Trichamoniasis and they are given antibiotics for respiratory disease, that's all."
Normally Ivan breeds 140 youngsters from his breeding stock (32 pairs). The first and second round is put on the darkness system from the beginning until Orleans on the 23rd July. The young cocks and hens stay together and train once a day. They are darkened from 4.30pm until 9am. Amongst these youngsters are 4 old birds and 6 yearling hens, but I will tell you more about them later. After Orleans the cocks and hens are separated and raced on the door system (training separately, coming together before and after the race). Many young birds were lost in 2001, but the remaining youngsters raced from Orleans, Bourges, Argenton, La Souterraine, Gueret, and nine races in a row. After these races the youngsters get some light until 9pm because they must moult. All racers, cocks and youngsters are given Mixture Plus, from Versele Laga (plus- Method). Double
National Victory: As I already mentioned there are a few hens amongst the darkened youngsters. Those hens sometimes pair with another hen, but Ivan doesn't- give them a chance to breed. When the youngsters were separated (mid July) two hens just had four eggs on the ground. Ivan gave those two hens a nest-bowl and raced them. He sent them to Argenton; the first bird arrived at 2.18pm (1,400meters). "Pretty

The 1st Provincial winner Limoges (Deno x Leekens) was lost in a bad race from Chateauroux. The 1st Provincial Jarnac (713km) named "De Rode Motta"B-5104526-96 was a super racing Bird. After this win he was put in the breeding loft, and with sucses as later will show!....He is 100% Persoons bloodlines and has won lst Jarnac Club 1999, 1st Jarnac Provincial 1,112 birds! In 2000, 2nd Jarnac Inter-Provincial from 3.579 birds in 2000. 2nd Chateauroux from 493 birds in 1998, 5th Jarnac from 1.008 birds in 1999, 9th Chateauroux from 3.890 birds in 1998, 17th Argenton 993 birds in 1998, 48th Chateauroux from 4.579 birds in 1999, 87th Argenton 2.629 birds in 1998, 115th Bourges from 3.480 birds in 1999, 122nd Bourges from 3.197 birds in 2000, 224th Chateauroux from 4.260 birds in 2000. The 1st Provincial Gueret Youngsters also moved to the breeding loft because the parents are excellent breeders. The dam NL96-1008450 (G. Peters) paired to the cock of Schroyen (Heusden) breaded many other good racers. Ivan wants to breed another strain with this blood. The 4th Provincial winner of 2000 is "Het Zwart Gueretje" as stated previously. I favorite, the Barcelona race. Ivan won 127th of 13.161 Brds. National in 2001, but I didden't find this hen B-5080333-08 (100% Dirk Leekens) between the darkened youngsters. She's in a really small wooden loft at the end of Ivan's garden. There he has nine pairs of racers on the natural system. These birds train once a day late in the evening. No special treatment, just some reserve hens and cocks to test in a few races; this hen did really well, she will go back on the race!...(with special thanks to Johan Kempen ...Auteur of the article) Results: 1990-1999
